Looking back to “Startup for the rest of us” podcast start

Evaldas Miliauskas:  You’ve been podcasting for almost like three-hundred shows, what do you think significantly changed over those six years compared to today?

Rob Walling:  Yeah, so we started the podcast, startup to the rest of us. I think it was 2010, that would be my guess, and a lot has changed. There were definitely fewer shows in iTunes, and fewer showed competition back then, but to be honest, there were a lot of fewer listeners.  What I considered was a fast start, and I already had an audience, I had about seven-thousand blog readers at the time.  It came every month and they would subscribe to our RSS feeds and all that.  And we emailed a bunch of them, and I published on the blog, and we did a branch promotion.  And even Living The Dream by Matt audience, I think we solidly made ten to fifteen episodes in, to that podcast.  And we only had seven-hundred unique downloads per episode.

Rob Walling:  So it was a long slug, basically, a long uphill battle because there were just so few people listening to it, and so we’re really were in it for kind of a long haul.  If you’re gonna have a podcast, I think that turning it into something worthy isn’t four, five, six hours a week of your time, it’s something that you need to think about doing.  You probably can’t do that with the first few episodes, cos you probably need to do everything when you get started.  As time goes on, you’ll wanna figure out how to remove yourself from as many of the pieces of it, as you can.
